Aleksander Kwaśniewski

Aleksander Kwaśniewski is the former President of the Republic of Poland (1995–2005). He participated in the famous “Round-Table” negotiations in Poland that finally brought the peaceful transformation of Poland and the whole of Central and Eastern Europe from communism to democracy.

A great advocate of Poland’s membership in both NATO and the European Union, he first led Poland through the process to join NATO in 1999 and later campaigned for approval of the European Union accession treaty in 2003, bringing Poland to EU membership in 2004.

During his Presidency, Kwaśniewski courageously confronted the past, significantly contributing to the reconciliation between Poles and the German, Jewish, and Ukrainian people.

He joined the Global Commission on Drug Policy in 2013 and is also Chair of the (regional) Eastern and Central European and Central Asian Commission on Drug Policy (ECECACD).
