Diego García-Sayán served as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers from 2016 to 2022. He was a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for two terms and served as its President from 2009 to 2013. A relentless human rights advocate, he has extensive experience working for multilateral organizations, including the United Nations and the Organization of American States.
García-Sayán was Minister of Justice during the democratic transition in Peru and also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He studied law at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and political science at the University of Texas.
He joined the Global Commission on Drug Policy in 2022 and is also a member of the (regional) Latin American Commission on Drugs and Democracy (LACDD).
