On 10 December, the Global Commission on Drug Policy marked Human Rights Day by reaffirming that the dignity, health, and rights of all people must guide drug policy worldwide. Despite growing recognition of the harms caused by punitive approaches, many countries continue to rely on policies that fuel discrimination, arbitrary detention, unsafe consumption environments, and preventable deaths.

In a message shared on the Commission’s social media channels, Commissioner Adeeba Kamarulzaman underscored the urgent need for human rights- and health-based responses. She highlighted that access to harm reduction, evidence-based treatment, and social support not only protects individuals, but also strengthens public health and community wellbeing.

The Global Commission on Drug Policy continues to advocate for drug policies that align with international human rights obligations and promote effective, sustainable solutions. Respect for human rights is not an optional component of drug policy; it is a prerequisite for achieving safety, equity, and meaningful progress.
